rudy vallee was the first true nation-wide superstar, born of the revolution of broadcast sound and the advent of radio. he went on from early remote nightclub broadcasts to begin the first-ever radio variety show, the fleischmann yeast hour, which ran from 1929 to 1939 and from there to a career in radio, broadway, film, television, and night clubs that lasted until his death in 1986.
